Power Steering Fluid Viscosity and Its Effect on Steering

Hydraulic power steering helps drivers turn the steering wheel without excessive effort. Behind that lighter steering feel is a fluid that transfers pressure throughout the steering system. Choosing power steering fluid, therefore, involves more than comparing brands or prices. Its viscosity and specifications must match the vehicle’s requirements.

Viscosity determines how easily a fluid flows through the system. Fluid that is too thick can restrict circulation, particularly when the system is cold, while an incompatible fluid may interfere with hydraulic performance. These effects can become noticeable when turning the steering wheel, especially during parking or low-speed manoeuvres.

There is no single viscosity rating suitable for every vehicle. Manufacturers specify fluids according to the design of the steering system and the characteristics of its components. Some vehicles require dedicated power steering fluid, while others specify particular types of Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF). Synthetic and mineral-based fluids should not be treated as interchangeable without checking the manufacturer’s requirements.

The safest way to select the correct fluid is to consult the vehicle owner’s manual or official manufacturer recommendations. Fluid colour, universal product labels and experience with another vehicle are not reliable substitutes for checking the specification. Fluids that look similar may have different properties and additive packages, which can affect the pump, valves and seals within the steering system.

Fluid condition also deserves attention during routine maintenance. Cloudy or dark brown fluid, unusual whining noises when turning the steering wheel and heavier steering can indicate a problem. However, these symptoms do not automatically mean the fluid needs replacing. Leaks, trapped air or worn components can produce similar symptoms and may require different repairs.

Replacement intervals should follow the vehicle manufacturer’s maintenance schedule. As a general reference, Auto2000 cites approximately 40,000 km, but this should not be treated as a universal interval for every vehicle. Cars exposed to flooding or showing steering-related symptoms may require earlier inspection. If contamination or leakage is found, the underlying cause should be addressed before simply adding fresh fluid.

When topping up, use the specified fluid and keep the level within the recommended range. Overfilling does not improve steering performance, while mixing incompatible fluids may affect system operation. If the steering suddenly becomes heavy or unusual noises develop, a thorough inspection of the steering system is more appropriate than replacing the fluid based on guesswork.
